Dave McKay remembers Bwana Johnny

I first met Bwana at KMGK, Des Moines in the late 70's. Bwana did the
morning show, always ending with Roy Rogers singing "Happy Trails"...
while Bwana interjected such phrases as "Take the fish outa your mouth
and SING, Roy!!!" That was my cue to drive faster, park the car, and
dash up the stairs to the second floor of the Travelers Insurance
Building just in time to take over for the mid-day shift.

One of Bwana's passions was partying. He rarely missed
build-your-own-free-tacos day at The Des Moines Ramada Inn lounge.
(renamed the "Rama Lama Ding Dong" by Bwana) Copious liquid refreshments
accompanied the event. Bwana's party antics were legendary. One party at
P.D., Ben Hill's home found Bwana crawling on all fours through the
crowd, biting women's ankles. Later that evening, he ran through the
house yelling, "I'm gonna be sick... where do you want the mural?!!"

To this day, I've never met anyone quite like him. They don't make 'em
like that anymore.
