Danny Holiday remembers Bwana Johnny

I have one Bwana story to tell you. I attended the Bill Gavin convention in 1973 in SFO with many

other "record types" and tons of DJ's. Back in the early 70's we had a habit of "stuffing elevators",

that is, we get well oiled and then stop on each floor of the hotel and put a piece of furniture

from the floor into the elevator.  We'd then sit down and enjoy the ride down to the Lobby.

Well, during the Gavin convention, Steve West, Myself and our friend Dan Walker went on

a stuffing run.  As it happened, Bwana got on the elevator as we were making a run down to the lobby.

On about the 5th floor, a very old couple got on the elevator and remarked that the lobby was filled

with a bunch of hippies and they we're drinking heavily.

I was about to explain the convention when Bwana jumped in and said,

“Well you see madam, my friends and I are doctors and we run a mental institution and every year

we bring the inmates to the hotel for a free weekend so that they can make the adjustment to civilian

life. At some point, all of these prisoners will be free and we're just trying to make the transition easier.”

Bwana went on to tell the older lady that if she heard any noises outside her room to dial Operator and

we'll get someone up there as soon as we can.  Sometimes though it takes 20 minutes.

The elevator door opened on the lobby level and the old couple went to the front desk and check out.

Hand over my heart, it's a true story.
